i think it's possible for a player to do a lot for a franchise without winining a championshhip and thusly having the number retired. i look at the canucks and as an example there's stan smyl. he was never a superstar, won't make the hall of fame but with his work ethic, desire, and leadership gave a lot to the franchise and i don't think there's anyone out there who thinks he doesn't deserve it. trevor linden will probably fall under the same catagory and does a lot for the community which helps raise the profile of the team and i have no doubt his number will be up there someday chamipionship or no.
