Just heard that Royce Ring of the Mets farm system is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft (which I'm not entirely clear on but it sounds like the Mets may lose him), because everyone needs lefty pitching out of the bullpen.

My question is why wouldn't they just re-sign him to a new contract? He's an awesome lefty and has been dubbed as the closer of the future for the Mets.

Someone care to clarify what exactly the Rule 5 Draft is, anyways?
