that won't split the net for you. That's a hub. The big difference between a hub and a router is that a router is usually DHCP enabled. What that means at the easiest level is that a router can configure interal IP's like 192.168.100.1 and so forth for each computer and give it the ability to act as if it was directly connected to the cable modem which uses an external ip like 66.11.23.168 to connect to web sites and such.
For what you want to do, you'll probably need to put out the cash for a router. There's ways around it, like "internet connection sharing" in windows 2000, and the client -server model, but all of that is kinda difficult compared to buying a router which i'm pretty sure now days is like 40 - 50 at wal mart
