It appears to be a maudlin type of guitar pop music that is doing the rounds, typically sporting a vocalist with a plaintive, whiney, high-pitched style of singing that may lapse into screaming.

I don't know, really. I prefer the New-Wavey type of guitar pop doing the rounds as opposed to the maudlin stuff as my musical trend of choice.
