I'm not saying the sports are anything alike, just that they both are sports. Football is just an example of a sport that comes on every week (for half of the year) that has no story lines or scripts and people love it. If something like the UFC had more mainstream exposure it could become very popular. Do I think it will ever be as popular as football or even boxing? No, not really, but that wasn't my point. I just wanted to point out that not everything needs to have a script to make it interesting.
