There's also a lot of "wow" factor to it. Even if people didn't have wireless internet access at home, it would still be a huge benefit to play link games between two systems and not have to run wires across the whole house.
Oh, and nic cards are so cheap these days I think they're going to start giving them away in happy meals. It wouldn't be that much extra on top of the wireless.
