popovich is good but has had good assistant coaches (namely PJ carlisimo) but he started off as the GM for the spurs and got rid of some other good coaches before naming himself the new coach. he has had great talent and knows how to contain them without their egos gettting in the way and play them well and he knows the right plays and when to call them. good coach, yes. great coach? time will tell, especially if his assistants keep getting better jobs with other teams. less successful teams but better jobs.
great coaches
phil jackson (always around greatness so this may have something to do with it)
lenny wilkens (winninest coach but also losingest coach?)
don nelson (poor mavs need to get over that hump)
pat riley (can't say anything bad about the man)
popovich 2 rings, maybe hes on his way to greatness by showing how he makes good players great (ginobili, parker, stephen jackson in san antonio not indiana, bruce bowen who is more of a container than a stopper; nickname should be tupperware; nazzi mohammed who was good in new york but need the right coaching to be consistent in a good environment). you're on your way pop. one more this year coach.
