I personally think Scorpion would be an awesome villain to sidetrack us while they handle the Eddie Brock and Harry Osbourne storylines. The Sandman and Scorpion being hired to kill Spider-Man by Harry would be a nice touch, making his transition into the Green Goblin seem harder than just simply going "I'm evil now.", since Peter Parker is his best friend.

I personally hope they kill off Mary-Jane in this movie. Maybe the same way that Gwen Stacey died? Have Harry Osbourne decide to save her from Scorpion and Sandman after he orders them to kidnap her to lure out Parker, due to a change of heart. Have Mary-Jane deliver one of the best slaps in cinema history to him, which makes Harry snap, shoving Mary-Jane off the bridge. Spidey catches her *CRACK*, her neck breaks. Follow this up with The Sandman blasting Spidey and an already dead Mary-Jane out into the water, and having Sandman become a sort of mud creature by mixing with the water, and you have some pretty good final action sequences lined up, IMO.
