The fans popped because of all the residual emotion left over form Raven's ;ast push.
But think about it this way: AJ ending JJ's year-long title reign was an emotional high for the comapny and a good point to build from. Especially for Styles who, having just signed a big contract, is going to be the TNA franchise for as long as the company exists (til September or so at this rate). Ending it after a month is just...
Remember what it was like at WM 20 when you saw Benoit beat HHH and HBK and then what it was like in the ensuing months when Benoit became a glorified curtain-jerker, not even being used as the focus of any storylines, and then when he lost to Orton he seemed even less important than he was before he won the belt.
Styles wasn't even on TV as the World Champion, so literally the first time he stepped in the ring as champion, he lost the belt. Regardless of the audience reaction, it was a bad decision.
