I think it's just that most of us have been jaded by the religious freaks that shove their beliefs in everybody else's faces and put themselves on a pedestal above the other "heathens" and atheists. I don't want to have to get dirty looks when Christians find out I'm an atheist. Maybe if ALL Christians accepted people of other faiths as equals, then we wouldn't have a problem with Christianity at all.
