Anyways, I would like to bounce an idea off of you. Would you vote for an opulence tax? The basic idea behind this I’ve heard a lot of teachers complain about how their school district doesn’t have enough funding, or the maltreatment of funds. Put an extra tax on tobacco products, alcohol, overcompensating SUV’s and pick up trucks for people who don’t need them, jewelry that isn’t needed for a wedding, and other products that aren’t needed for daily life. If you can afford something you don’t need then tax it. I plan on getting a truck next month, I like to buy girls jewelry, and I drink more than my fair share, and I would support it. Just slap a 5 percent tax on these items, half the tax goes to the public school system, and the other half can go elsewhere.
Allow our service members to get these items without the tax as a way to say thank you for their hard work, and everyone is happy. My idea for this came to me at work one day. I’m currently employed at a supermarket in southern California. The demographic isn’t that flattering… I’m pretty sure that 2/3rds of the population in 29 Palms has some from of government assistance. I’m also pretty sure 2/3rds of these people aren’t currently looking for employment. I know one family personally who only relies on welfare from one person while five to seven people live there at any given time.
I like to drink. I love to drink! When I drink, I don’t drink cheap crap. Now I see people who cash their welfare checks all the time who like to drink more than me. Hold on a damn second! I bust my ass off for my money, and it seems for their money also. I don’t mind helping people out when they need help, but for people who don’t even try to better themselves? No, tax them. I can afford a bottle of whiskey when I want to get one, and I’ll be willing to pay a little bit more tax as long other people pay it also. Raise the price for everyone so they buy less and so at least some of the money that is taken away and given to a good cause.
