Does Ric Flair need to be in the wrestling business? Does The Undertaker? No. Just because someone doesn't need to do something doesn't mean that they are going to give it up. Druggies don't NEED to do drugs, but they continue to do it anyway.
He may not need to kiss ass, but that's exactly what he does.
For a guy who is supposedly so secure with himself, he overly relies on his position with the company / management - getting away with whatever he wants to in the process. Sure, part of it is WWE's fault - letting him do just about anything he wants, and never reprimanding him; but the other half is his fault, because even though he's physically a grown man, he has the mind of Chris Griffin.

Hogan must have kissed Vince's ass along with The Rock, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, and Vince kissed every star's ass in return.

There's a difference again. JBL, a so-called "vet" in the business, continues to kiss Vince's ass. Hogan does not, and really never had to. WWF courted him, as they always wanted him back after he'd left [each time, from after the Rocky movie right up until nWo debuting in WWE]. Same goes for Rock; I'm not a Rock fan, but if anything - Vince is the one trying to kiss his ass.
I'm not saying that they [or anyone else] have never kissed ass, I'm saying that they didn't continue to do so once they were set, and if JBL is set he has no reason to continue kissing ass other than being a giant douchebag.

As far as this goes, I couldn't care less. I watch a full WWE broadcast a handful of times in a year [and that's when I have company that would like to watch it, or if I am somewhere where they are watching it].
I'm not dumb enough to sit through the garbage that entertains the majority of today's simple minded fans. Maybe it's because I was spoiled by watching actual talents that I don't get anything out of watching someone replaying gimmicks from the '80's - or angles that revolve around someone's speech impediment.
So as far as him sticking around goes, great for him. I hope he stays in his little comfort bubble, because without it he'd be in the ring with guys who wouldn't put up with his shit - and would dish it back to him 10 times over.
