It all seems a waste to have the SmackDown! Championship pop-up, then. Even the most un-intelligent fan will bethiking "Why didn't they wait until the draft was over?". I think if they're having a SD! Championship, they should unify the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship, in a mini-tournament event at Summerslam. Have the SmackDown! Championship contested in the main event (I dunno, with a match like Chris Benoit vs. Brock Lesnar or something), and with matches like The Undertaker vs. Randy Orton, the event should have no problem selling.
Personally I think they should stick this through. Next week, have HBK and Kane drafted to SD!, and have them interfere in the match. With the loss of two SD! wrestlers (presumingly near the main event scene), you now have eight men in site for the title. Have a one night tournament at The Great American Bash, where Shawn Michaels wins and becomes the first-ever SmackDown! Champion, defeating Chris Benoit in the finals.
The World Heavyweight Championship is basically lineage-less as well, so you may as well merge it with the WWE Championship to make it seem bigger.
