I dunno. After reading the book a long time ago, I remember how much I liked that ending. I'm glad to see that it wasn't tampered with. I'd much rather take *SPOILERS for those who haven't seen/read it*

bacteria being responsible for the deaths of the aliens

than something similar to the ending of Independence Day. I thought this was a great movie based off of a great book. The whole red vine thing creeped me out too.
