Sting was WCW champion in October of '99 when Hogan was the challenger at Halloween Havoc. Hogan laid down for Sting and was pinned and left. Sting (who was a heel at the time) apparently issued an open challenge to anyone in the back and Goldberg came out (who won the U.S. title from Sid Vicious earlier in the show.) It turned out to be a non-title match with Goldberg won but he thought he was WCW world champ. Then Sting attacked the ref after the match and was later stripped of the title and that led to the 32-man tournament for the vacant WCW title at Mayhem which Bret Hart won by beating Chris Benoit.
