The writers knew what they were doing? All respect to the previous writing team, but putting the charismatic Mick Foley in a custome that, by his words, made him look like a 'giant poop' and making him talk out of a boiler room probably wasn't the soundest gimmick ever.
The WWE did get very lucky with Eugene. They tweaked the character a few weeks in just at the right time before it started getting offensive. Eugene is a tremendous gimmick, which also owes a lot of its success to how much of a talented man Nick Dinsmore is. You can't put any old wrestler in something as sensitive as this and expect it to succeed.
