OK, maybe I was too hard on the gimmick before. If he plays it well, it could be good. If he's a heel, it has the potential to be awesomeness. Him looking the other way when the referee is counting to five while he holds in an illegal move, but not getting disqualified because of his "disability" would be one of the better heel techniques ever. But do you really think we'll see that.
I have a sick feeling the WWE will play it up to laughs, and try and make it warm and fuzzy. That's bullshit. There is a good way to handle this, and a bad way to handle it.
CM Punk as a heel/tweener/face trying to spread the message of his xXx beliefs, using the "deafness" (which would be a planned hoax by CM Punk) to his advantage=potentially good way. CM Punk playing a retarded babyface tring to live his dream but being ridiculed while lame jokes are made behind his back=horrible, horrible idea. This is either oging to be offensive in a good way, offensive in the bad way or inspiring in a good way. I think it'll be the middle option, personally.
How hard would it have been to have CM Punk debut on RAW or SD! claiming he was the REAL World Champion, though. The WWE has a good relationship with Ring of Honor, can't they ask them if they can have CM Punk bring the title on TV, and maybe even defend it in a potential classic with Paul London or Nunzio, or someone? Hell, have John Cena/Baista (depending on which brand CM Punk's on) actually cost CM Punk the ROH Title.
How hard would it have been to have CM Punk come in and start claiming to Triple H he is "The Game", "The Cerebral Assassin" and it's not "HHH" it's "xXx". A feud where some new guy debuts only to immediately begin to attempt replacing Triple H would be an instant classic, IMO.
How hard would it have been to have CM Punk come in, and accuse Shelton Benjamin of taking drugs? Have CM Punk explain to Shelton that he's seen the signs, and Shelton has not been himself in the ring lately, because they're taking their toll. A feud over the IC Title between the two would be a great feud. CM Punk can then move onto defending against RVD, with RVD's stoner habits being used as motivation for the storyline.
They could probably do all this WITH the deaf character, but unless CM Punk is portrayed as a wrestling genius, this could potentially be one of the worst decisions the WWE has made in a long time.
