The argument for that would be one of a few things. First, most people at Notre Dame are Catholic, and most of them Irish. Second, the name was likely created by an Irishman. Third, the Irish are/have been descriminated against, but not to the extent that the Indians have, and their nickname doesn't imply the negative aspects that some say the Indian names do. Just thought I'd throw out the opposition.
