It's been done before with Mick Foley and didn't end a match. Personally I think they should have just had Matt choke the shit out of him by hanging him or something where they would need the police and medical staff to come out to stop him from "killing" Edge.
That woulda been cooler, but honestly, I think that this was good enough, especially given the quality of the match. I would have preferred a less recycled finish as well..
