Bioware states Mass Effect 3 will be a lot harder than the first 2 games and sort of requires the co-op missions to be played in order to help the solo campaign.

This is to make the oncoming threat of the Reapers seem that much more deadly. It's also a means to encourage players to check out the cooperative multiplayer mode, which can assist in their single player game. The goal is to increase the "readiness" rating of planets in single player, and the co-op boosts that rating. They also make sure to say that if you fail against the Reapers, you can always go back to an earlier save to continue preparing.
