I'll delve deeper on this though. John Cena almost got fired because they weren't using him right. He busted down doors and made himself with the rapper gimmick.

I'd say while you are correct that they didn't kill John Cena, their hamfisted creative methods certainly limited his success. He was big with the kiddies - which is certainly lucrative. But while 18-35 begrudgingly accepted him as a great talent over time, the demo's long-lasting resistance to Cena stopped him from being truly transcendent.

The thing with 18-35 that makes it so ideal... is it has a trickle-down effect. If 18-35s love something, the chances are, so does 12-17 and their little brothers and sisters will follow suit.

When your demo is 5-12 or whatever it was that loved Cena, you'll get those merch sales and whatnot, but you're not getting all you can out your commodity.

Though now he's kicking ass in Hollywood, and WWE gave him a platform to advertise that charisma, so maybe you do have a point. However, I don't think the WWE's idea was for him to leave for Hollywood so he could make more money.
