Amateur wrestling obviously isn’t the same thing as pro wrestling but the skill sets of amateur wrestlers translate really well. Amateur wrestlers can make it look real because they know how to do it for real. Not to mention the fact that wrestling requires some of the most rigorous conditioning of any sport out there. There’s a reason why guys like Angle and Benjamin are such machines and it’s not just good genes.

I mean if you just want big bastards to lumber around the ring like a moose giving birth than sure grab your talent from anywhere. But a good roster has a mixture of styles and if you want to fill a spot with a quick technical grappler, amateur wrestlers are naturally disposed to that style.
