WWE also probably put in the request for the FBI to get involved since WWE could have shut down the website but then the owner would just find a new domain and escape any real punishments.

The content is protected by US copyright laws so it makes sense why the FBI gets involved.

The excuse used for Megaupload was due to while it was an overseas site, it hosted and profited from illegal US content which became a reason used to shut it down. It also didn't help they sort of lied to the FBI/Justice Department about a file remover that really didn't work.
