Not really. This was going to eventually happen due to gaming companies abusing the loot box system and its predecessor micro-transaction system on mobile platforms for years.
EA just spend up things by trying to go to the next step with Battlefront II. Even if they didn't, Valve was going to cause it to happen due to their own recent gambling scandal with CS:GO.
What also hurt them was more studies have started to establish ties between loot boxes and gambling in regards to addiction similarities.
