A couple of Wii U news with the first being Nintendo won't be mandating developers to only make games in HD for the console and the other being the origin of the tablet controller comes from one of the concept arts for the Wiimote.

Unlike Microsoft who made a demand of every single Xbox 360 game must be in HD, Nintendo won't be making the same rigid demand for the Wii U. The main reason was to give developers a lot more choices in developing the games with the extra power being used to beef up performance or other non-graphical parts of their games.

Nintendo also wants to help shorten development time for developers so that game development doesn't become out of control in terms of costs and time. The Wii U will also be a lot more focused on having third party studios develop Nintendo-owned games than what was done on the Wii and past Nintendo systems.

Quote:
“It is not necessary for us to deploy a huge number of people in order to develop such games,” he continued, stating that, more than ever, Nintendo is bringing in third parties when it does need to develop more graphically complex titles.

“When we need massive power and have a lack of internal resources, we collaborate with outside resources and pour necessary resources to where they are needed. We are increasing the frequency of working with outside developers where Mr. Miyamoto and our internal developers alone used to develop.
While the tablet controller shares a lot of its design with other tablet devices, the original idea for the controller actually existed during the development of the Wiimote. Based on concept designs released last year for the Wiimote, one of the plans for the Wiimote involved a touchscreen pad built-in which was eventually removed during the final design of the Wiimote.
