I guess it's more the personalities themselves that appeal to the mainstream. Of which there are absolutely none anymore. Whether it's presented as a sport or as a WWE circus, it means fuck-all without those transcendent characters that speak to people of all walks of life.
Given the WWE is so brand-oriented, it's impossible to develop those kinds of personalities.
