Overall I feel like a great many of the non-indy NXT performers were doomed to fail on the main roster anyway.

The Ascension jump to mind immediately. In the NXT universe they were fine - it's only an hour long show and they didn't often have people on back to back shows, so you didn't really need anything more than a quick squash match from them every other week. It worked for what was needed.

Yes, they were killed dead as soon as they got called up and they instantly had JBL talking about them like they were jokes. But they were just speeding up the inevitable. Even if they had tried to book them credibly, it would've fallen apart the second they had to start doing full-length matches and it becomes clear that they can't work.
