WWE let them expire years ago and did nothing about it. Most of the old WCW and ECW trademarks suffered that fate because Vince & co. didn't really see any value in keeping them. Even with the launch of the WWE Network, they still were not reviving those old trademarks until recently.

Them wanting to revive an old WCW/ECW name or getting pissed someone else was trying to claim those abandoned trademarks is why they've been aggressive at trying to get them back in recent years.

Like with Halloween Havoc, they went after some company in California who tried to trademark the name and old logo despite WWE no longer owning the trademark at the time.
