Even if WWE and/or NXT did have some grand genius plan against AEW, that pretty much went out the window after the first couple of weeks at most.

If anything, their genius plan to regain that edge or "best alternative" status since then has been the creeping in of more main roster booking mentality for NXT shows. That used to be an issue every so often during the Network era but was easier to mask it with a hour long show and talent usually not staying around long enough to hog or become stale in the big spotlight.
