It's also unrealistic and unrelatable from the start.

No one 'borrows eggs' or 'asks to borrow eggs'.
The film would have worked in that context if it was sat in 1950. I don't even answer the door when I hear someone knock and if someone I didn't know asked me for something I'd assume they were up to something so I'd say I didn't have any and shut the door.


Especially a rich affluent neighborhood, like the one in the film. No one asks to 'borrow' they just go purchase.
