According to Gamestop, there won't be a traditional midnight launch event for the game. Instead its going to be a digital event on the Xbox One marketplace.

Microsoft is taking advantage of this, as it's running a midnight launch event online for Halo 5, the day before its October 27 launch. It'll be running a livestream for six hours before launch, which will feature media from the Halo universe, a roundtable with staff and Nathan Fillion, and other tidbits.

Day 1 patch was revealed to be 9GB in size. Main reason for the size is due to all the updates done to the game's multiplayer since it went into the "gold" phase. Overall space required is 55 GB (46 GB for the game itself).

Multiplayer is the main cause for the patch. Holmes mentions that map content is in the update, presumably with other multiplayer substance. That's typically par for the course when it comes to triple-A titles with multiplayer component.
