Someone help me out here (Cody Rhodes)
I’m a bit out of the loop these days, especially with AEW.
Can someone explain to me why some AEW fans hate Cody? Not trying to to start a WWE vs AEW argument, just curious about all the comments I’ve read over the past few days about Cody. ![]() |

It started with broken promises (people like me picked up on that), then it was him being completely pretentious in interviews. That seeped into his on-air content and presentation. I noticed some people pick up on how much the show gravitated around whatever meaningless crap he was doing. Some had theories he booked himself out the title picture because he knew he couldn’t hang. But the criticism became wider when he cut those awfully constructed promos about race relations and he started branching out into reality and game shows that wrestling fans see as “bullshit.” Since then it’s been a war of attrition between him and the fans who think they’re smart.

Basically he’s a pretentious git who looked good when he wanted to do pro-wrestling, but the more and more that comes out about him makes him look like someone who doesn’t really have anywhere firm to plant his flag.

I don't watch but I've always gotten the impression that AEW fans feel like he's their HHH

I think he started to get booed after he did the "USA rules, UK sucks" "patriotic" promo during the Anthony Ogogo feud... Feel like a lot of people started to "sour" on him then. Then after that was the Malakai Black feud... Black was very over, so the crowd naturally booed Cody when he got offense in on Black. Then think it just snowballed into a bunch of people booing him regardless.
Then soon after that I think he left again to shoot the "Go Big Show," so maybe some people thought he was "going Hollywood" also on top of other things Last edited by Triple A; 02-16-2022 at 07:34 PM. |

It's worth noting that Cody was having a similar reaction by American New Japan fans for having less than stellar matches. It wasn't really until All Out when he put on a really great performance, and then once AEW started he had a really great first year. He did some really good angles channeling his Dad's spirit a few times, had some insane matches with really risky bumps and a lot of blood. He was really on top of the world about 5 months into the run on TNT and seemed like the best booked babyface in wrestling.
Then things really changed. The product shifted and Moxley joined and quickly became champion. It was great, Mox was awesome. But still Cody was a good part of the show having an interesting story with Brodie Lee that resulted in him putting Brodie over huge to take some time off for a filming project and then when he returned, it seemed that there was a sect of the fanbase that began to turn against him for playing a very gullible style southern baby face. Fast forward a few months and he cut's a really odd promo about racism, very out of place and it goes down hill from there. All throughout this whole saga is rumors of dissention amongst the EVP's. Cody has taken a lot of time off screen from AEW and seems to be distant from a lot of people except his circle. He's turned his back on the company and the fans that made him. I never knew he had a yellow streak up and down his spine but he does. Cody Rhodes is a coward and his neck tattoo fucking sucks! Once Vince's see's his neck tattoo he's gonna cancel his deal and fire his ass. |

Because the same AEW fans who love Flippy shit, ex-WWE debuts, and Fed Bad promos, they couldn't understand somebody who didn't wear Jordans, watch anime, and play video games. Plus, they really dislike/hate his wife because she is a woman who doesn't cut herself for their amusement.

How is he a coward? Is him going off to do outside projects “turning his back to AEW?”
Just trying to understand |

Just watched his promo about America and racism. A little cringey, but doesn’t seem that bad to me.

I think the reality of the situation is that Tony took over creative totally, Cody had a fair hand at the beginning. There was tension there and some tension between Cody and The Buck & Omega. The fans LOVED Cody in the beginning but there was always a small portion who rolled their eyes when Cody was on. I think that small portion just grew and grew as his stories became cornier and cornier. He also had multiple segments just go belly up and make no sense like the weigh in segment for the match with Anthony Agogo with Paul Wight. It just went nowhere.
Also the reality show is so fake and it just doesn't lend itself to the babyface that the AEW fans did fall in love with. It was easy to see through. Add to the fact that nobody ever bought Brandi as a legit competitor in AEW, she can't cut it. Then there is money which is probably a big part of what this is all about and why Cody isn't there now. But that doesn't have anything to do with your question. Essentially the fans turned on Cody just like the did Roman and Cena and Cody was continually pushed as a cookie cutter babyface but the fans didn't want that. I think Cody was gearing up for a heel run maybe, it seemed to be hinted at from time to time, just enough to get him a good fan reaction for the night. |

it felt like there was always that element of pretension in cody that noid pointed out, especially after he left WWE. that pretension probably did him some favors with indie/what would become AEW fans when this whole thing kicked off.
but it all felt very weird for me once AEW got rolling and he's coming through the middle entrance on the ramp only he uses, the quote at the beginning of his song, the time he literally sledgehammered a throne during one of his entrances. ironically, i think a lot of this, followed by his tnt title runs, brought about the HHH comparisons (which i don't agree with). and then yeah it gets into the stuff that Triple A brought up starting with the ogogo feud. |

I stand by this: Cody wasn't always his own best ally. However, he was certainly set up to be the fall guy. My favorite bits were people blaming Cody for doing things not even a fifth as self-indulgent as the other EVPs. Like the Agogo feud was ridiculous, but people weren't even talking about how, one week after the DSotR with Pillman, the Bucks put themselves over Pillman Jr. submitting him with a Sharpshooter. Or how PAC was MIA for most of the program leading up to Omega-Cassidy-Pac. Or my personal favorite, the 10 man elimination where they put their top contender in with his jobber stable to face the Elite, who were dressed as Space Jam characters. Also, the winners of said elimination match were Omega and one of the Jacksons. But Cody did an over-the-top promo, so fuck that guy.
I can also almost guarantee that, at one point, the words "You don't need Cody to book. You're the boss!" was uttered by an EVP. |

Cody failed at the most important part of his job, making Tony Khan feel important and special. Without that, he had to go.

I feel like both Tony and Cody wanted the other to make them feel special. A fool's errand for both.
