Do you distinguish between "Cover" bands and "tribute" bands?
What the topic says.

Basically, the "difference" is that one plays a specific band's songs, while the other dresses up and emulates the band in question.

yeah i kinda lean towards this defenition, i don't think cover bands are neccesarily restricted to playing just one band's songs where tribute bands do, in addition to dressing up to emulate them.

but I saw this one really awesome Beatles tribute band in April...Twist and Shout...they were teh awesome.

Yeah, I always understood the difference being that tribute bands play one band's songs, while cover bands play a variety of other band's songs.

I've seen a few tribute acts that didn't try to emulate appearance at all. I saw a really good Thin Lizzy tribute act, called Thin Az Lizzy, whose lead singer was a bald white guy, which is about as far from Phil Lynott as you can get. The guitarists were a couple of massively fat guys with long hair and beards too.

Some tribute bands put on an excellent show. Our student's union booked the Complete Stone Roses for our Rag Ball, and they were brilliant. I've heard people say they're actually better live than the real band were.

I dunno. There are a ton of "cover bands" who only play one act's music. There are a ton of people who don't have a single song they cmposed. They're called "bands."

But you don't see them dress up for every song they play for every single band they cover.

Well they can. Tribute bands are supposed to emulate the band they're tributing, and a big part of that is looking the same as the band.
If they didn't, it wouldn't be a very good tribute.

Like I said, I saw an excellent Thin Lizzy tribute act whose lead singer sounded EXACTLY like Phil Lynott, but he was white and bald.

I'd rather have a good band, than some idiots in a costume. Some tribute bands are really good. The Complete Stone Roses got invited to play a big festival here in Ireland, they're so impressive.
