Paul W.S. Anderson responds to AVP

If you head on over to bloody-disguting.com you can read a post that talks about AVP being shown at an industry showing and that Paul Anderson was there to answer questios about the film. If you click on the link you can read all about what he said and why the film is Rated PG-13 instead of the R everyoen noted. He also goes into stuff that will be on the Directors Cut DVD and he talks about what was CGI in the movie and what wasnt. I was surprised about certain things. Theres alot he talks about but click on the link to read the interview.

Jeebus, that site's page layout is HORRIBLE. I couldn't focus on the text with that glaring red border on the dark black background. Anyway, after copying it over into notepad, it was a decent read. I'll download the directors cut, but I'm not going to be running out to buy it. I paid to see it in the movies, it'll be like I'm finally getting what I paid for the first time (hopefully).

I feel sorry for the guy, he is really getting hammered over this movie. The PG-13 isn't his fault, and I knew from watching the movie in the theatre that it was a shitty cut. Oh well, I'll be waiting for the directors cut. Hopefully if there is to be a sequel, Fox will stfu and let him make his movie.

After reading some of the rants on AvP, I must say some of these so-called fans are taking the cut far too seriously. Any cross over automatically has an uphill battle to please two fan groups. Ask any comic book writer and they'll tell you. Hell, I'm a writer and after some drafts of Superman/DBZ, I can tell you you can never please both fans fully. But these 'kids', who most likely have no idea how to pen a script or how many other factors can alter your finished work, are tearing into Mr. Anderson unreasonably. Some elements in his script were hard to swallow, like the human/Predator team; but any true fan of AvP (The tales been told through comics and games for a decade now) knows that it isn't the first time Predators accepted humans in battles.

I mean damn, how many worst movies ever can exist?

Considering that there are only two "vs." movies in recent times that I can think of, the Crossover genre of movies is pretty limited right now. THis movie was worse than Freddy vs. Jason, so one could easily accept the lable of "worst movie of it's genre" for AvP.

Also, "Any cross over automatically has an uphill battle to please two fan groups. " I have to disagree, because I never heard a bad review of the storylines for computer game and its sequel. The LEAST the writers could have done was maintained any sort of continuity to the characterizations of the alien and the predator. I haven't seen the movie, but I know enough about it to come to the following conclusions:

1: The movie is set in the present. If that were the case, people haven't SEEN FREAKING ALIENS BEFORE. So why in the hell doesn't the movie turn into a "Contact" ripoff? Because it was written badly.

2: Why is it in antarctica? THe previous two Predator movies made note that the predator felt more comfortable in very hot places. This movie should have at least have been in an environment where the temperature is either hot or at least warm enough that you don't notice the temperature.

Now, I don't want to rip into you too much here, but I'm a writer just like you are. I don't consider crossovers to be entirely inspiring, but I do them every now and then to entertain my friends. But that's just the thing: they're supposed to ENTERTAIN. These "kids" as you refer to them (meaning anyone who didn't like the movie) aren't saying that they're dissatisfied about minor details in the movie. (ok, griping about the PG-13 is a little petty, but I've heard about a lot more bad in the movie than just that.)

Defending this movie because crossover scripts are hard to write just doesn't cut it anymore. Until last summer, it was impossible to write a "good" comic book adaptation, because you can't please everyone. X2 broke that trend. Then until this summer, it was impossible to write a "great" comic book adaptation for the same reasons. Spiderman 2 cured us of that ignorance. My point here is that Anderson's vision of the crossover wasn't even an effort to make a quality movie. It was made to make bucks quantitatively. Furthermore, although I agree that this movie couldn't possibly be the worst movie of all time, chances are that the writing wasn't the producer's top priority. Just making the movie was probably their top priority (because the name AvP itself could sell even if the screenplay was written by the same team as "Anacondas.")

The movie is based or loosley based on the AvP graphic novels, one of which is set in Antartica.

Game storylines and movies story lines are two different experiences. We didn't have hours of play time to explore the AvP story as in it's games or novels; so somebody enjoying the those ways of telling the story would like it more. If AvP was Lord of the Rings long, maybe we could have seen the little details that come with the story, but that wasn't the case.

Respond 1:
Why would you even want a contact ripoff? Besides, in the Aliens franchise it has been established that Weyland-Yutani Enterprises has known about the Xenomorph presence; perhaps because of a certain mountain climber from years prior...

Respond 2:
Good point about the hot temperature thing. Maybe I'm taking it too far by reminding you that these were young Predators, and maybe after they earn their respect as hunters in a tougher region, they can go hunt in the prefered hot lands. That, and maybe hunting Aliens requires a different climate; as the cold helped in keeping the Queen refrigerated.

You know what was a good crossover, Transformers/GI Joe, a comic book. It was very detailed and told in a classy way. If a movie was made, after both franchises establishes themselves ofcourse, it wouldn't be as good. A crossover script is difficult when you want to entertain, and flesh out both icons histories. And then you say they aren't inspiring, as in you don't think too highly of them in the first place. They won't be inspiring if you throw a dart at superhero names and make a story out of the two names you hit; Batman/Spawn, what the heck for? But franchises that share a certain type of feeling, like two killers that never die, or alien races we keep running into, interesting stories can be made. Robocop/Terminator had a comic story that would've saved both movie series even in a shorter script form; but no one went with it seriously because cross overs were uninspired cult fan pleasers back then.

Maybe when they're given the proper respect from production companies AND fans, we'll get our X2 and Spider-Man quality crossovers.
