The Current Tag Team Divisions
Alright, I know people are sick and tired of “Ways to Improve the Tag Team Division of Both Brands” threads, but here is a “Way to Improve the Tag Team Division of Both Brands” thread.
I think if you gave any wrestling fan a true or false exam of their opinions on the current state of each brands’ tag team division, you would get “TRUE” for the question that would read “Is the tag team division of each brand currently weak?”. I’ve been thinking and thinking about this, and I’ve come to the following problems with each brand. RAW: The World Tag Team Division has direction, but it has no room. La Resitance and Rhyno & Tajiri are the forerunners for this division. Two great tag teams, but nothing to make them look great. The Hurricane and Rosey can’t even be counted as a current tag team since Gregory is sitting on the shelf. I think a few new teams should show up and really make the division a giant feud. Every wrestler wants to prove they’re the best. We haven’t really seen that on RAW, mainly because they are no tag teams. SmackDown!: Almost the opposite to RAW’s problem, the WWE Tag Team Division has the utensils, it just doesn’t have the direction. Don’t get me wrong, The Shooting Stars are great WWE Tag Team Champions, but you have these two guys that should be worried about going in their every night and facing a different tag team and having to fight just for the right to have their blue and gold belts. Think back to 2000/200, in the days when tag teams like Edge & Christian, The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz were furnishing the division. Even AFTER the champions had wrestled a match they had to worry about another team winning the titles. So how do we fix this problem? I wouldn’t really be an expert, but we all have our ideas. Mine is that I think the tag team division should be what it was about in 2000/2001, appeal. The tag team division wasn’t about two sub-par wrestlers who teamed together for the sake of it. They were wrestlers who were greatly skilled, and with four greatly talented wrestlers in the ring fans could expect more than just a match, they could expect a spectacle. Edge & Christian had flashy personalities and would do anything to do win the then WWE Tag Team Titles. The Dudley Boyz were the tough intruders to the division. You didn’t want a tag team match with The Dudleyz, in fear of your safety. The Hardyz were flashy in the ring. You had to keep one eye on the ground to make sure one didn’t grab your legs and leg drop your groin, and keep another to the sky incase a flying sack of stunts didn’t land on your head. The Right to Censor were the power houses who would end up cheating if their size was not enough. The APA were the tough brawlers, and God help you if you let your partner go one on one with either member of The Acolytes. So far on both brands we have two forms of tag team. Champions and non-Champions. I like the way the WWE debuts tag teams, but I think they should remain foreground, even when not challenging for the titles. I might post some ideas for tag teams later. The tag champs lose non title matches all the time. That doesn't really make them seem like they're worthy of holding the titles. An occasional non title match loss is expected, and wanted. It boosts fueds, and upcoming matches.
I don't think the tag team division will ever get back to how it was in 99-02. Think of all the tag teams they had: Edge and Christian, Dudley Boyz, Hardy Boyz, Acolytes, Y and A, Too Cool, Kaientai, and more. Obviously the first three teams dominated that division, but all the rest were actual tag teams. WCWs tag team division was also exciting back in the late 90s. The WWE seriously needs real tag teams, with tag team music, tag team entrance videos, tag team entrances, tag team moves, a tag team finisher. But most importantly, they need to look like a tag team, and last longer than two months. |

I think Tag Teams should be brand specific. IF you have Tag Champs on both brands you're diluting the tag team roster. because half is on one side, and half on the other. I say, put the tag teams on Smackdown. Raw can still have tag matches for the sake of feuds not for titles.

Part of the problem is that on both shows only a small number of people appear on TV every week. So you dont have time to put over new teams. With the tag division, there is barely time to have one tag program on the show every week, so that always for the titles. Hence the reaosn they only seem to have 2 or 3 teams at a time.
I think they need to cut back on the long TV matches and let more guys on TV, that might get some new guys over, maybe. |

You could easily fill a couple of ten minute tag matches in place of some stupid RAW Rewind or PPV hype or Diva Search or some other stupid segment that does nothing for the general storylines. I agree that the tag division of 99/00 was amazing, and that's what SD! should vie for. IMO, it's almost easier to do a tag division... you get twice the exposure for the same amount of time! It's such a great deal! But of course, the writers have tended to lose focus of the overall picture, concentrating on parts at a time. Problem is that if you're not one of those parts being concentrated upon, you're screwed, because you're basically dropped off the show and the planning list. |

Why There Are two sets of tag team Titles is beyond me. They don't even have a decent tag division on eathier show, but there are two Titles. They need to drop the Raw Titles and move all the tag teams to Smackdown.

Maybe they could unify the World Tag Team Championship, and have the champs appear on both shows? I feel as if there are too many mid-carders on SmackDown!, so why not turn them into two or three tag teams. Make some tag teams look worse than others. Rank them if you need to. Give them team strategies. Make the tag division(s) something to look out for.

I agree 100% percent with this. The tag division wasn't just about having belts backs then, it was about innovation and individuality. It, in some cases, was the most exciting part of the show. Something you could push towards a main event.
I loved all the teams with team names, team gimmicks, team music... It just fit. Even if they weren't the greatest, it added variety to the division. Oh, what I would give to have some of those teams back: Midnight Express New Aged Outlaws The Headbangers The Godwins The Hardy Boys The Acolytes The Rockers ...I wish it was how it used to be. And I say that if they aren't using Jericho, to throw him into the tag division long term. Jericho is gold with anybody. |

La Resistance The French-Canadian tag team that will always get heat. Don't go soft with them. Have them ALWAYS play the heels. You see some heels step in the ring with heels they are trying to push, and the "weaker" of the two heel units becomes the face. I think La Resistance should play the heels if they got into the ring with say even JBL. Maybe have them pick up a victory that that allows them to be on every RAW, and maybe to sing the Canadian national anthem before all their matches. Let them cut promos to garnish even more heat. Rhyno & Tajiri The major force in the tag team division. I would love to see Paul Heyman go on air and rip into Rhyno telling him to be the Man Beast he once was. Have them build up some leathal tag team moves. Maybe have Tajiri get his opponent in a Tarantula, and have Rhyno hit The Gore. Maybe from the Tarantula position, when Rhyno connects with The Gore, Tajiri could spit The Mist into the other opponent's face (who would be outside the ring). Have Rhyno & Tajiri be the more devastating tag team in the division. Give them big moves they can hit out of nowhere, like Rhyno going for the powerbomb, and Tajiri coming off the top rope with the leg drop. Highlights of the Night RAW is Jericho, and Stevie Night Heat. Jericho is the credible main event worker with a cocky attitude, and Richards is the happy go lucky extreme psychotic character. Maybe have him stop mid match and yell "Invisiblility online!" or somehting really stupid like that. Have Jericho and Richards get over for who they are, not what they do in the ring. Have them cut entertaining promos, and maybe drop a few lines to us internet folk. Have them be the "smark" tag team. Add Victoria in there and you have a face stable. Battling Superhero League Crap name, but they could do something with The BS League.Hurricane and Rosey could really get over. Not leaders of the division, but some decisive tag team wins on a regular basis could work. Bischoff's Bitches Eric Bischoff's hitmen. They shouldn't hide the fact they support Bischoff, and are his faithful followers. I think Chuck Palumbo and A-Train would be good for this. Both are fairly big, and people would buy into the fact that they are undercard guys that are only on RAW because they kiss Eric's ass. Bischoff could book them a sone singles wrestler, and maybe Chuck Palumbo and A-Train could have a joint Intercontinental Title reign? Either way I could see these guys getting MAJOR heat. I might do SmackDown! later. |

I would like to see either E&C back together, or Matt Hardy and Edge forming into a kind of new Brood. Edge just needs to be in a tagteam somewhere.

I don't know, that tag team title sucks right now. I don't know if they can ever be as good as they were with E&C, the Dudleys, and the Hardy Boyz. And anymore, I just change the channel when it is a tag team match, because it is always, heels isolate the weak member of the faces, then finally the strong member gets tagged in, and faces win.

Smackdown seems to have more tag teams atm than raw.
i mean, technically, one of the top tag teams on Raw atm is Coach and Cade. Personally, i like how smackdown is getting tag teams like: The Dudleyz Kidman and London Noble and Chavo Kenzo and Dupree Rico and Haas but i think raw is falling behind quite badly in the tag teams stakes atm |
