Album that surprised you the most in the 2003
Which album came out that you were sure would be less than sub-par, but turned out to be a really excellent album?
For me it's Blink-182's new album. I really expected the same old stuff from them, but it seems like they are trying to be a bit more serious in their music. I really enjoyed the album. |

I'm going to have to go with blink-182 as well, I was expecting another Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, but I was pleasantly surprised by the self titled.

I will also say Blink's new album. Not because I expected it to suck or anything, just because I was surprised at how many times my ears jerked off to it in its short 2003 existance.

APC - Thirteenth Step
I have their first album, and it's not bad, but it's by no means great except for a few songs like judith, magdelena and three libras. This album was incredible though from start to finish. Stuff like "The Nurse Who Loved Me" going into "Pet"... i thought that was great. There's not really any weak tracks on the album except lullaby, which isn't a song track anyway. |

The Cooper Temple Clause album, mainly because their first album (2002) was innovative and something fresh, yet 2003's release was pretty bland and boring, apart from really only one song. Very disappointing.
I've had the APC album for a couple of months now and haven't really listened to it. |

Primus because I wasn't expecting anything more from them ever. ![]() |

White Stripes - Elephant. To top WBC was a tall feat for anyone but I surpassed ad ruled.
Strokes - Room on Fire. As above really, Looked like a 1 album Wonder but this album is, well almost as good as Is This It. Libertines - Up The Bracket. Best New band of the last year. Despite Pete being in court for robbin' Carl's flat, they were awesome live and are just good musicians with good songs. British Music once again pissing on American. Darkness - Permission To Land. Rules. Stereophonics - You Gotta Go There To Come Back. First 2 albums were amazing. 3rd was OK, This one is shite. They were good live in Cardiff on the 20th Dec however. Feeder - Comfort In Sound. Echo Park was wicked but this is better, I didn't think they could top it. |

There have been a lot of really good albums this year:
Iron Maiden Dance Of Death The Living End ARTillary etc but they were always going to rule I've gotta say, Alice Cooper - The Eyes of Alice Cooper. the man rules all, but his last few albums haven't been his greatest. Eyes is almost the best of all (Love It to Death will always win). Anyone who hasn't heard it (I now Funky has) get the ****er. It makes all other music piss (including Kids of Boredom). |

I had no expectations at all for the Mars Volta album, so I was pleasantly surprised when I actually heard it.

"Year Of The Spider" by Cold. I heard Remedy from Backlash last year, so that was the only song I had heard from the album.
I threw it into my CD player, and it freaking rules. Some nu-metal mixed with slower, more meaningful songs. I thought it would be straight up, boring nu-metal. |

Beyonce's surprised me because I actually bought it and liked it. Evanescence's was awesome but having never heard them before, it's not like it's a surprise. Limpbizkit - Results May Very surprised me content wise and because the three songs I had expected to be on the CD weren't on it and it sounded nothing like them. I didn't think it people would like it but I did. I knew St Anger would suck for some reason when I bought it so that went right back to the shops. |

Not sure if it was released in 2003 or not, but The Mars Volta album was a surprise for me, as I really wasn't sure what to expect, and it turned out to be brilliant.

Permission to Land by the Darkness also surprised me, since I originally thought they were shit. However, the album rules.

Let's see...
Not released in 2003 but surprised me this year anyways: Maroon 5--Songs about Jane Ra-From One Both are incredibly good, despite both having a kinda mainstream style that generally leads to bland, boringness. From this year-- The Stone Coyotes--Rise from the ashes: Why would I be surprised by an act I already love and pimp out like mad? Because listening to the samples on their website, I didn't think I was gonna enjoy the record at all. Jesse Malin--The Fine Art of Self Destruction: Well, apparently, some people would already know the guy from his days as part of D Generation, but since I had no fu>cking clue who he was, he came out of the blue as far as I was concerned. I didn't even really like his stuff at first, but it grew on me with the incredible radio play The River (WRSI) and a couple of friends who were fans, I got hugely into it. He's even got props from Bruce Springsteen on this one. I don't know how much it sounds like D Generation, because I've never heard it, but some of these songs were written around the writing of their last album. Nuno--Population 1: well Hell, it's Nuno F'ing Bettencourt. Still, I didn't expect this after two albums with Mourning Widows. P1 is closer to Schizophonic in all its brilliance. Pop 1 is probably my #1 choice foir this year. Nuno is excellent at creating a sound that is both poppy and catchy, but at the same time, interesting, fun, and worth paying outrageous import tarriffs. |

Dave Matthews's Solo Album "Some Devil."
I expected it to sound exactly like his stuff with DMB, but I was pleasantly surprised that it had an entirely different sound. |

Finntroll - Visor Om Slutet
I'm not sure if it's because Katla had to quit, but this album was a disappointment after Jaktens Tid. But then again Viso Om Slutet was suppose to be a "very experimental album" so perhaps next album will be a better one. |
