PS3 news
I couldn't find a ps3 thread so heres some info on it

the midst of the Pre-TGS 2004 Business Briefing in Tokyo this morning, PlayStation Father and CEO Ken Kutaragi revealed some cold hard facts about the upcoming PlayStation 3. Unfortunately for eager fans, an actual release date or system design wasn't among them, but we did learn that the PS3 would definitely use Blu-Ray -- and that it will also play DVDs and CDs in addition to having 54GB of storage capacity. But how that 54GB of storage space is going to be distributed was not revealed (ie: no idea if that's including the new 54GB Blu-Ray discs minus a Hard Drive, or if it'll be the traditional 24GB disc plus a Hard Drive).

Though some of this news has been whispered about before, or confirmed in various sound bytes here and there, Kutaragi's statements are the most that any representative of Sony has given at any one time about the system for as long as we can remember. Sadly for us, nothing else about the PS3 was revealed.

Of course, if something more is uncovered, you can be sure that we'll be back to cover it. So keep those eyes and ears peeled for some possible surprises in the coming days.

Are any of you guys affiliated with RangerCentral.com? I agree with the Ranger thing, Tommy and Jason rule.

If the PS3 is a tenth as powerful as Sony is claiming, we could be slated for a leap in home entertainment. But if PS2 and XBox are any indication, big talk about power is usually... Big talk about power. PS2 wasn't the powerhouse Sony claimed and neither was XBox according to Microsoft. What they should know by now anyway, is that developers are the ones who gotta release the power of whatever system. It's been years and I've yet to see a game on XBox that supports all of Microsoft's tech talk a year before the system launched. This could be said for all the major systems. We have to understand that all this tech talk is merely possibilities being sung to our heads.

Sony Announces PS3 GPU
NVIDIA and SCEI confirm next-gen graphics chip

In an announcement made around the midnight hour earlier this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment and NVIDIA Corporation jointly confirmed that they have teamed up to create the graphics chip for Sony's next videogame console. Though the system has not yet been given an official name, the highly anticipated PlayStation 2 follow-up (known in most circles as the PS3) will certainly have some powerful hardware behind it -- as the SCEI/NVIDIA collaboration will incorporate the next-generation GeForce technology as well as Sony's system solutions for Cell Processor-enabled consoles.


The collaboration itself has been made with a multi-year royalty-driven agreement in mind, with the custom GPU serving as the foundation for the PS3's graphics and image processing functions. Interestingly enough, this agreement will go beyond the confines of just the PS3, however, and will also apply to future Sony digital electronic products as well. The custom graphics chip will be manufactured by Sony's Nagasaki Fab2 group in addition to OTSS -- a joint fabrication facility co-run by Toshiba and Sony.

"In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously. In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from NVIDIA and SCEI," said Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president and COO, Sony Corporation, and president and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "Our collaboration includes not only the chip development but also a variety of graphics development tools and middleware, essential for efficient content creation."

"We are thrilled to partner with Sony Computer Entertainment to build what will certainly be one of the most important computer entertainment and digital media platforms of the twenty-first century," added Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO, NVIDIA. "Over the past two years NVIDIA has worked closely with Sony Computer Entertainment on their next-generation computer entertainment system. In parallel, we have been designing our next-generation GeForce GPU. The combination of the revolutionary Cell processor and NVIDIA's graphics technologies will enable the creation of breathtaking imagery that will surprise and captivate consumers."

Speculation as to when further announcements regarding the PlayStation 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) continue to run rampant throughout the industry. Several industry insiders point to E3 for the big unveiling, while others feel that the GDC may provide a surprise reveal early next year. Whatever the case may be, IGN will be there to bring it to you

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has revealed that it will not unveil the next generation PlayStation game machine this month. Instead, noting that game makers and other insider parties would have a lot of trouble making a March unveiling schedule, the company has decided to hold the unveiling at a later, currently undisclosed date.

It may seem strange for a company to make an announcement about not announcing something, but SCE has previously gone on record stating that it would properly unveil the PS3 prior to the April 1 start of fiscal year 2005.

SCE stresses that development on the PS3 is not running late. The company is still working to show off the system at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo, set for May in Los Angeles.

Will we be able to play PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3? Apologies if this question was answered above, but unfortunately I can't read ...

PS: I had the Dragon Dagger!! I also had the blade blaster and Power Morpher with the five original coins, shame you couldn't get a Green or White Ranger coin ...
