Norton AntiVirus problem
ok, as if having stupid ass fans that won't start/sound like a lawnmower wasn't enough, now Norton AntiVirus has decided to piss me off.
I've had it installed for a few months, and over the last week, the liveupdate has popped up like usual, but when I go through it, it says nothing needs updating. It does this once every 24 hours, and it's pretty annoying. I have noticed on the window which says what Norton components are installed, that only LiveUpdate is on there, I am almost 100% sure that this is where the problem lies, since I would imagine that all the components should be on that, so it can check them to see if they need updating. I took a screenshot of it, so you can see what I mean. ![]() Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I've uninstalled and re-installed it (rebooting about 4 times inbetween) and still it does the same thing. I dunno if the fact that it is the 2002 version matters much, i've tried downloading 2004 but it wouldn't run the LiveUpdate on it when I installed it, so I had to go back to this. Someone help please. ![]() ![]() |

You know that Norton has a big ass hole in it's programming allowing viruses to disable it, right?

nav 2003 has been fine for me, especially seeing how I have a crack that allows updates till 2029. Nav has always picked up any virus that tried to wiggle its way through my system.
Panda is a piece of shit, so is AVG. We've done testing on these anti virus programs, where if you do a scan, it'll come up clean, yet norton will find the bug. Mcafee, Trends, and Fsecure all make good alternate choices though. |

Panda has been far better on my system than Norton every was. We've done testing between Panda and Norton as well, to find that Panda always discovers the stuff that Norton missed. |

WTF, AVG is brilliant. Mine picked up a few virus' that Norton and Mcafee didn't find.
I don't know what kind of testing you have done, but maybe you should be doing it again. |

Well you know, it is kinda hard to decide what to do when one of you says get this AVG, one says get Panda, one says stick with Norton cause the others suck, I dunno.
I haven't used any of the others, so I'd like to be able to stick with Norton really. I might just go out and buy it. |

Norton isn't all that bad, it's just that it takes up so much of my system resources so that while I'm running it, I can't multitask. If my computer didn't run so slow while running Norton, I'd keep it. That's really why I use Panda, because it doesn't take much to run. If yours runs fine, then go ahead and keep it. Try to find that 2029 crack.

![]() Not that I don't trust you or anything, but you know. Do you guys all buy your Antivirus stuff, since I am thinking about doing so. I've downloaded pretty much all the programs I use anyway, so it's no big deal. |

Norton is always fine for me
I tried Panda once though, and it came with a few viruses and wouldn't let me open Norton or a bunch of other programs, making sure that I couldn't fix it. had to reformat. ![]() |

For a free one, AVG is the best.
For a free one... As for the question of tests, we did a few different ones. Like going to a know website that had a trojan on it, scanning a computer we knew was infected, slaving an infected drive to a clean computer and doing a scan etc etc etc. I dont have all the results anymore, as we did this testing when I was still in Victoria. None of the Antivirus software was perfect, but Norton 2003 was the best as far dections and removal. Stay away from norton 2004 though, it fucks up more computers than it fixes. 2005 seems to be fine, running it on my work computer now, and havent had any issues with it thus far. Panda is a cheaper solution than Norton, and as far as how well it actually works, its not terrible, but all the annyoing pop ups get to me. Any antivirus is better than none, or one you know isnt working right. Aside from norton 2004, Symantec has had the best antivirus software year in and year out as far as im concerned. Aside from the antivirus software, and symantec's ghost software, i'd stay clear of symantecs other stuff though. The internet security is a joke, and slows your computer right down. System works should be burned and sent to hell. Dont ever install either on your system ![]() |

Oh, and if you want to try something a little different? Try get a copy of InnoculateIT, I didn't think it was that good, but then they took over a company called Vet a couple of years back which was making the best virus scanner by far, and I know the new InnoculateIT uses alot of the Vet engine. Could be a good option.

I have always sworn by Norton. Just this week I did a clean SP2 install and thought I would give McAfee a go.. Bugger me what an annoying pain in the ass that was, it kept deleting all my cracks for stuff. No way to configure how it handles viruses Eg: ignore/quarantine/delete etc.
It lasted a total of two days on my comp then I pissed it off. Norton 2005 is back in.. I love it. If you think it’s a resource hog (which it is) just turn off auto protect. Easy. |

Yeah I do leave it running, most people should. But if you experience big slowdowns from Norton, turning it off helps allot. Just scan regularly.
