Chris Benoit
I was wondering, anybody know how Benoit got his nickname "The Crippler" from? Was that from an event that occured, or was it a self-imposed nickname?

I'm not 100% sure.... Heck I'm, not even 15% sure.... but I think it might have something to do with Sabu....

During a match with Sabu he took Sabu by the leg and threw him upwards with the plan being that Sabu would land on his stomach. However Sabu decided mid way to try a flip and land on his back. But he didn't have enough time to do it and landed totally on his head therefore injuring Sabu. Then Paul Heyman gave him the character the "Crippler" Chris Benoit.

It was when Benoit broke Sabu's neck in ECW. It goes into abit of detail on Benoit's dvd. He was saying how worried he was about Sabu and phoning Heyman to find out how he was doing, and all Heyman was replying with is how great it was, and that they would come up with this gimmick where he would be dubbed "The Crippler" because he cripples people with his hands.

Hate to break it to everyone, but the match you are talking about, I've seen it a dozen times. ECW introduces him as "the Crippler" Chris Beniot. He had the name before that.

BDC is right. I just checked the match on the Benoit DVD and Styles kept calling him "Crippler Chris Benoit".
My guess, if he did get the name from the match, is that Joey Styles did the commentary after the match happened and Heyman told him to call him the Crippler. |

Benoit has been known as the Crippler since he came into America. I guess it just sounded cooler then Pegasis(sp?) Kid...

Styles often dubbed on the commentary, so it was probably done after the match.
