Really weird PC problem (updated)

Right, i'm building up this other PC to give to my little cousin, and it has everything it needs, but there is no floppy disk drive in it. Seeing as how i'm using the FDD that originally came with that PC, and seeing as how I have never once used it since I built this PC, I thought I would take it out of this PC, and put it in that one.

Simple enough idea really eh? Well not quite.

See, this PC has to be a complete bastard when I do this, because I can't get the FDD out since one of my hard drives is in the way, so I remove the HDD, then remove the FDD. I put the hard drive back in, turn my computer on, and… it doesn't boot. Nothing at all, just a black screen, nothing happens. Turned it on a few times, nothing.

So I put in a different HDD to make sure it's my HDD that is the problem, and voila it works. Now this HDD (from the old PC) has Windows 98 on it, and it is a FAT32, my drives are both NTFS, one with Windows XP on it, one is just files, and I can't access either of them from Win98, i'm guessing because of the different file systems. The PC recognises the HDDs when it boots up, so there is no problem with the jumper settings and whatnot.

Anywho, last night I just decided too put the HDDs back as they were, and turn the PC on again, and it magically works, the PC boots up fine as if nothing had happened, and everything is back to normal. Although originally I booted in safe mode (since it said Windows didn't start properly last time I booted it up) and all this spazzy text came down the screen so I just reset and booted normally, and it worked.

It has been running fine since, apart from one instance this afternoon where the PC just shut itself off (black screen) and did the whole black screen on bootup again, I left it for a couple of minutes before turning it on again and it works, and i've had the PC on since.

Anyway, after all that rambling, what does it sound like I have done to my hard drive? It's obviously a physical problem, since nothing went wrong until I removed it from my PC and put it back in, could it be that I put the wrong power plug in? I had two that I could have used, and forgot which one was plugged into it, so I plugged one in at random, they are the same, but one has two wires going into each of the 4 bits of the plug (red, brown, black, yellow I think) but the HDD I used with Windows 98 on it worked with both, so I dunno if it would make any difference.

The only other thing I can think of is that I somehow scraped/banged/damaged part of the HDD, the part where you plug in the power cable SEEMS to be a little wonky, but I dunno. All my data is fine so there is no problem there, I must just have somehow damaged my drive.

Is there anything else that could possibly cause a problem like this?

Do you get the initial boot screen? U need to go into the bios and set the primary boot device as "HDD-0" aswell as you may need to change the lil jumper on the HDD to primary instead of secondry. hope this helps.

I have my HDD's set on cable select, that has worked for like 2 years now, HDD-0 is my primary boot device on the BIOS, the thing is that when it doesn't work, the BIOS doesn't even come up, literally I just get a black screen, normally I get this NVIDIA info first, then my BIOS stuff, but none of that came up when I was booting the PC up.

My first thought was that my monitor plug might have come loose, but it hasn't. Everything is connected fine. I really don't understand what I have done.

Your harddrive stores all the information of what your computer is running. If you unplugged your Floppy it would have read that something was different and might not have booted properly. That's why it's best to shut down completely and maybe even unplug. It might have just been a fluke if it's working now. Doesn't sound like you did anything physical to it, just sounds like you may have unplugged something or not fully plugged something all the way in.

Yeah, I was hoping that that would have been the case, having something plugged in wrong or something like that. That doesn't explain why it just turned off instantly this afternoon though, plus in My Computer, my floppy drive still shows up, I dunno if I should remove it in the Device Manager or not.

Weird, my PC just rebooted out of the blue today aswell.
ran scan disk on all drives and everything seems fine. It's got me stuffed why it did it.

Remove the floppy in the Bios by the way.
Oh and the only time i have had a comp not boot like you described was because of a mis-set jumper on the Hard drive. Or of the IDE cable was in backwards.. its possible.

My PC has been fine until today, I installed a new graphics card (GeForce 6600GT 128mb) but to get the old one out and this one in, I had to unplug the CPU fan cable, since it goes all the way down to one of the PCI slots, where the fan speed control thing is.

Anyway, I did that, put the graphics card in, and forgot to plug the CPU fan back in, and had my PC on for about an hour to an hour and a half, when the PC froze and wouldn't boot up for a few mins (similar to the way in which it did when I posted this topic) but the problem was obvious this time. After a few minutes the PC booted up, and I made sure I had the CPU fan running again, and all was well.

I just installed Unreal Tournament 2004, and the graphics don't look too good on it (the Nvidia startup screen, havent tried the full game yet) and so I went to set all my options and stuff, and the PC blanks out like it did a couple weeks ago, and the system speaker makes loads of rapid beeps. Started the PC up again, and everything is going fine again. I checked my CPU temp, and it's at 45-50C with a 4000ish RPM speed on the fan.

I'm thinking the CPU may be the problem here, or possibly the motherboard or the ram, or the graphics card. I'm now pretty much convinced I have no problems with my hard drive(s), and that the problem lies with one of the aforementioned components.

Anyone got any ideas? I think i've already had enough PC troubles to last me for all of 2005.

OK I rebooted it, played UT2004 and put all my settings to how I like them, and played a bit of onslaught, the game looked ok, but then when I went back into the settings to change the mouse sensitivity, the system spazzed out again.

It just went black, and this horrible sound (probably from the game) kept looping, like when winamp crashes or something.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have spent a lot of money on this PC, I would kick it to pieces right now.

Right, i've sorted the graphics problem, that was a bug with the driver, for SiS motherboards, the games run fine now.

The main problem is that when I play one of the games, my PC craps out, just goes black and I have to shut it off at the mains, and start it up again, I think I have damaged the motherboard or the CPU.

I was looking at the motherboard with a torch to see if there was any damage, when I heard a click (that I normally hear just before the PC turns off or reboots) and it rebooted itself. When the PC started up, I got a hard drive boot error, and it said to insert system disk. So for some reason now, it wasn't recognizing anything on my IDE 0 channel (it said I had nothing where my HDD-0 and HDD-1 are, and recognised my DVD-RW which is plugged into my secondary IDE channel)

I wasn't sure if this was the IDE cable or the power, so I reseated the IDE cable, and now it boots up ok.

This is really starting to worry me/piss me off, I am desperate for help right now.

it's a Codegen 330 something or other, what makes you think it is the power supply? It wouldnt really explain why it wouldnt detect my primary IDE channel, unless that was the power to the hard drives, hmm.

Also, does it sound like I have damaged the CPU at all, since it's when i'm in CPU-intensive games that the PC spazzes out.

Doesn't sound like the CPU problem. If anything the system would freeze up (like it did) and turn off so it wouldn't burn itself out. The graphics sounded like a driver problem and a lot of this sounds like driver problems. Make sure you have the latest driver for our Mobo, Videocard, and Soundcard and go into Device Manager (right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab) and see if there is anything with yellow Xs that might be the problem.

It's looking like my motherboard/power supply can't handle the video card, so tomorrow i'll put my old video card back in and test those games out.

I'm hoping it's my PSU, I don't really fancy shelling out another £100 for a motherboard.

Yeah I'd suggest getting yourself a nice grunty Antec power supply 550w or something.
You won't need to get a newer one for a while.
It's not just the CPU that would get hit by the games, also your video card.

You'd be surprised at how much the power supply can effect your PCs stability. Do you know what model your motherboard is? If so you can do a search for Motherboard monitor and download and configure it. It'll tell you the voltages of your power supply rails and you can see if any drop under stress

hmm ok, the Case and CPU are around the wrong way

You should be able to get the metres up for voltage in the settings part of it.

It's been a while since I've used it sorry man. Don't really go to hard on my PC much anymore.

How long does it take to die?
What drivers are you using for ya video card? The ones on the CD, or NVIDIA Reference drivers?

Takes about 60 seconds to die, even when standing still, I ran it for about 20 seconds. I am using the drivers I downloaded off Nvidia's website, a special beta driver for SiS motherboards (the latest ones from the site and the ones on the CD cause problems, see this and this

Anyway, after playing the game for a tiny bit, those voltages things look like this:

Hmm
They don't look too bad, but I'd still say it's your Power Supply.
Have you got the latest BIOS for your motherboard? You should be able to run the gigabyte @bios software to update it.
Also, uninstall the Nvidia drivers completely and try a different version, maybe the ones off the CD?

You could try the Omega Drivers from www.omegacorner.com

They are usually pretty good and stable.

ok, I just found that the graphics card has a socket to plug one of the power supply plugs into like the hard drives have

Apparently 300W is the recommended amount for this card, 350W for geforce 6800 and above. God damn, if not having the power supply plugged into my card was what is causing this shit then I am going to punch myself in the face.

All of the board's power circuitry is packed on the right side of the board, coupled along with a 4-pin Molex power connector which is needed to supply sufficient juice to the card. XFX doesn't bundle a power adapter in their retail box, although every modern PC should have at least one free power connector in their systems to hook this card up to. The card will run in 2D mode without any power connector attached, but will crash the system if a 3D game is launched without the power connected. Unlike some previous cards, the nVidia drivers will not warn you about the power connector not being plugged in - make sure it is!

Yeah a lot of the new cards that have more power have one of the slots now. That does make sense though.

Got a new motherboard now, had to reformat but I got everything back the way it was quickly again (3rd format in 2 months ) and I got a 500w PSU also, it says its a silent fan but it isnt really, my system fan is still a bit gay so I might chuck/replace it.

I might hook up some more/better RAM too, since I can use dual channel now :[
