Exclamation I think Friday Night Lights is one of, if not the best sports movie of all time

Simply for its ability to make a high school sport that important. In high school, you could only dream of actually being important like they were in Permian, and the movie did a great job of showing that. The story isn't a tacky underdog story, its a big team getting second place, even though its a true story (they actually lost in the semi's) its original. They bring great emotion into it, you just got overcome with emotion at numerous parts of the movie, at the end when they are getting pummelled and cheated and there is nothing you can do about it, like everytime you see Boobie Miles, some of the hits and stuff, it really gets you. I thought the acting was good, the way they used the talk radio to explain things was brilliant, and even though some of the football scenes were a little phony, I don't think they took away from the film, and the rest of the shots were really good. I just think that it captured what football was really like in Texas at the time, captures the ultimate dream for a high school athlete, wen't at it from a different light then the traditional underdog miraculously becomes amazing and wins it all (or loses at the buzzer), and was an overall really good movie.

I have seen lists of the tops sports movies, usually with Hoosiers on top. Well to be personally honest, Hoosiers is a good movie but it doesn't relate to me anymore, and I don't think it is the best. Small town team goes to the state tourny under a new coach, nothing about that stands out to me as the best. The lists usually include Jerry McGuire, meh is that even really a sports movie? Some of those golfing ones don't need to be on there, Tin Cup and stuff? Come on, sports. Even movies like Field of Dreams, its a great movie but I don't consider it a sports movie as much, I forget how it ends, but I remember it being about Costners life more then sports.

The two movies that are always left out, Prefontaine and Without Limits. I can't decide which one is better, I haven't seen Prefontaine lately, but both are unbelievable movies. I don't think you have to be a runner to be completely moved and motivated watching Pre.

Friday Night Lights is definitely Top 5 sports movies. Rocky is up there, and for me Any Given Sunday.

It's a toss up for me between Friday Night Lights and Rocky.

If nothing else though, Billy Bob Thornton has my favorite acting performance ever in a sports movie.

I watched Friday Night Lights and was very upset with what I got. I wanted to see it from day one, it looked great. What I got was a let down. For me it was just lacking something. And the entire time I was just thinking of Slingblade since Billy Bob and that annoying QB in the movie were both in it. The kid was good in Slingblade, he was so fucking annoying in this movie. Maybe I'll give it a rewatch sometime since all you praise it so highly but I'll have to see.

I saw a trailer for it. It looks fucking shit, to be honest. Cheesy, probably only enjoyed by homos who love all that male-on-male pent-up emotional bollocks where they eventually all hug each other and win or lose heroically. And learn a great big lesson.

Based on a true story. The dramatisation of it is what makes it cheesy. "True story" films are quite often ridiculously cheesy and overblown.

Friday Night Lights was good but it was too over the top. Like every single hit made a guy flip or he would get knocked out. I liked it but I wouldn't say it's one of the best all time.

The best sports movie is Bull Durham followed by Raging Bull, Hoosiers, and Rudy. Friday Night Lights doesn't come close to any of them.

I never saw the movie but the commercials pissed me off.

They were all like "this is the greatest sportsmovie of all time" or "one of the greatest sportsstories ever told" and that would be all it said. I was like "Yeah but what the hell is it about? :foc:"

All I could tell was that it had to do with Football.

No, not at all. I'm not remotely interested in it, or the story.

I just counted the cliches in the trailer. Black guy with attitude problem. Son under pressure who has tense relationship with his father. Mentor-type coach who straightens them out and comes out with poignant philosophical teamtalks before the big game.

The premise of the story is that this football team is one of the most storied in the state of Texas, which if you know anything about Texas you know that thats a big deal. They come into the season and are supposed to be a state champion contender, lead behind a great running back (black guy with attitude problems). Instead, the running back gets injured early in the season and things start to fall apart, but the team comes back together and makes the playoffs after winning a coin toss. They roll through the Texas State playoffs until the championship game (in real life it was the Semi finals) where they meet the best team in state. They end up losing the game.

I don't see how a coach giving an inspirational speech is cheesy, if you've ever played for a team that meant something then thats what coaches do. That being said, its not even like that. The coach isn't a super inspirational guy, and he doesn't give a huge emotional speech that turns everything around.

If you'd watch the movie instead of blindly attacking it you would see that the plot is different from the average sports movie and what you call cliche is what its actually like in West Texas, even though I don't think there are many cliche's at all.

I am not going to watch it. It looks shit and full of cliches, and Texas is a fucking terrible place, full of fat people.

I won't to bone the brown girl out of that. She's on ER. It's an unspoken dream to perform sex on a proper brown Asian, black nipples and everything.

Personally I thought it was alright nothing great. The thign that would of made it better was if they made everything more like in that time period. Great story but in the beginning of the movie they were playing on the new Nex Turf which was introduced at the earliest 2000, and one kid on a team they were playing was wearing a new Revolution helmet which werent introduced till 2 seasons ago.
