Hostel
I got to preview this movie with some friends on Thursday night, and it was so amazing. I'm a big horror fan, so normally that kind of stuff doesn't phase me, but I actually became nauseous a few times.

I enjoy how the movie lets you get to know the characters, yet still lets things happen. This is where Wolf Creek failed for me. It spent time with its characters, but the time spent with them was so boring. Hostel doesn't make the same mistake. It develops its characters while still keeping things interesting.

When the violence starts hitting, it is sickening because we've taken such a ride with the characters. The fact that the violence is some of the goriest stuff I've seen, ever, also adds to the sickening feeling.

This movie is so bad ass. Discuss.

I hear it sucks. Not surprised.

You have to plod through about an hour or more worth of yawn inducing t'n'a. before getting what you essentially came for.

Horror flicks died in the 80's....

I really enjoyed the movie.

The little twist in it also caught me off guard.

Just when I thought the violence was done, more and more just kept coming.

And how about the See No Evil trailer with Kane in it...

The character development in this is horrible, mostly because Roth has no ability to write dialogue that isn't sophomoric. Hostel is better than Cabin Fever and better then most horror movies that are getting release these days but all in all I was somehwat dissappointed. Roth has a clear love and passion for the genre and has enough talent to be good but he lacks that extra something to make him a great horror director/writer.

Wolf Creek built their characters in much more down to earth, tolerable way. The violence in Hostel whhile gory for a mainstream film is nothing innovative or new (or even really all that gory, then again I may be spoiled by the sheer amount of horror movies I hown), in fact I was expecting a hell of a lot more from a movie about torture.

I'll still see it a few time as I by no means didn't enjoy it, I was just dissapointed slightly.

It's better than Cabin Fever? I'm sold. I wanted to go see this yesterday, but I didn't get a chance. However, I ran out and saw Cabin Fever on opening day and bought it on release day. Granted, it got torn apart in reviews, but I still loved it. In my top ten movies for sure.

Cabin Fever was another dissapointing film imo. So my saying Hostel is better than Cabin Fever is not a huge compliment.

I think I'm in the same boat as you on that one.

I still love CF, like I said, but I too expected more than I got when I watched it. Good to know that Hostel is the same way, but if it's any improvement at all, it sounds like it's not a waste.

I liked both but nowhere near as much I was expected to going into either film. Both were dissapointing in someways. It's weird had I not had expectations I'd probably not be as ho hum about the films. I guess dissapointment just taints everything.

Horror movies, action movies, sci f movies are about horror, action, sci-fi. Why people complain that character development isn't well done is always puzzling as these movies are typically built around a premise and not a character.

Horror movies that by-pass character development entirely for end to end horror are exempt from such criticism, films like that Hostel though that actually do spend a large majority of their run times attempting to develop characters should be and will be criticised if they do it poorly.

I saw Hostel again and enjoyed it much more the second time around, since I knew what to expect and thus my viewing was not tainted by dissapointment. It is still no where near as gory or as good as it could have been but it;s still better than almost every single PG-13 horror movie that has been relsed in the past 2 to 3 years.

BTW, I'll pass on this one. Maybe it's the new trend to stay away from Tarentino movies, I don't know, but I know he's overexposed for my liking and pumping his name ahead of the movie turns me off.

Usually when QT has most of the control on a movie it is great. (see JackieBrown, Reservoir dogs, Pulp Fiction).

Hostel he had next to nothing to do with, other than being exec-producer, exec-producers are rarely invovled creatively.

Well that explains why the dialogue isn't as terrible as Cabin Fever's but I'd argue if QT was invovled in the dialogue he wasn't involved enough heh.

Not worth the ordeal it puts us through. Tries too hard trying to look gruesome and sure it's gory...but not shocking or surprising so, yeah. Just ultimately "unworthy".

However die hard fans who just like seeing gore and tits may still get a kick out of it.

I agree that I really liked how the characters were developed and that unlike a lot of horror movies that just kill off random characters that no one cares about, you actually feel for the characters when they are tortured. I thought that the movie was great

The flick was ok...a little too much t & a maybe...the eye scene was pretty nasty. For what it was it was ok...

This movie was such a let down. I mean i came into thinking it was gunna be some major gore. Aside from the ending and the chick getting her eye cut off. It wasnt gorey at all. It was almost like they didnt know if they should go balls to the wall and be gorey or tail it back a little bit. It was an ok movie but if i was making this movie. There would be nonstop gore. The buildup was good. The hot euro chicks losing there makeup sucked. The last 30 minutes should/could have been alot better, but it was a total letdown to me. WHy cant any movie just go all out and make it gorey. I'm sick of the cut away scenes and shit. Maybe it was just me, but i give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars. Just wasnt worth the hype.

The story was pretty decent, but I thought the gore was fairly lame.

Few things i didnt like.

1) What reason was Ollie in this movie for? None at all imo.

2) They could have gone into a little more detail as to why all these people were involved in this plot to carve up tourist. Including the hotel people that they stayed with and the Dr. or wannabe Dr.s they hired to do all the carving.

3) At what point did these tourist killers start to pick there victims. I mean i understand it was probably when they were locked out of the Hostel and that kid let them come in his room. He was obviously involved, but how the hell could you possibly plan shit like that.

4) It seemed like the only people not involved in this plot was the group of bad ass little children and the victims. Thats hard to believe. How could you run an operation like that and not have someone know about whats going on. What with all the people involved.

The porn part of it dragged on for too long.

It was an OK movie, idk though. Its not something Id go out of my way to watch again.
