The best racing game(s) is the Gran Turismo series, bar none.
Honourable mentions to: Live for Speed 2, Need For Speed Series, Outrun, Burnout Series (fun factor anyway) Sega Rally 2, Daytona, Street Rod Series (My personal Favorites), wacky wheels,and micro machines.

All Different, and all excellent in their own ways.

Never played The original Mario Kart, but played heaps of whacky wheels, same spirit really.
GT is awesome, but your right about it getting old, I'm 60% through and havent played it in months. But for sheer racing, cars, tracks, graphics, modifications (although Live for speed is more advanced, and NFS is more rice), you can't go past it.

I loved Burnout...in my virgin gaming days what started me off was Crusin' the World/USA cant really remember. Although everybody worshipped Madden we ended up playing "Crusin" b/c it was quick and hell braggin rights...lol Ahhh the Days

Waverace 64 was the shit! I remember playing the tutorial/demo round with "You're Gonna Make It Afterall" (or whatever that song is) doing nose spins. .
