The Departed
I just finished watching this with about 5 other people after hours at the theater, and I was amazed at how brilliant this movie is. It was the shortest 2 hours and 40 minutes I've had in my entire life. I
I can't name one bad performance in the entire movie. Everyone has amazing moment after amazing moment. Scorcese uses music better than almost any director in Hollywood today. Quentin Tarantino gets praise for making old songs no one has heard into classics. Scorcese should get praise for redefining music we grew up on. This is seriously one of Scorcese's best films, and if you don't go see it you are a fucking cuntmuscle. ![]() |

I think in a year where movies have been relatively underwhelming from an Oscar perspective, and this movie is just so amazing, he can't not win.
And the Academy loves giving awards to make up for passing up someone in years past, so this really does seem like Scorcese's year. |

The popular buzz though is that the violence will cause the Oscar to pass him up.

I guessed all of the top acting and directing awards last year without having seen all the films. I just went through, examining what The Oscars had to gain and lose. Like for Brokeback Mountain, I knew it wasn't good enough to win Best Picture, but they didn't want to appear homophobic, so they had to either give the movie Best Supporting Actor or Best Director. George Clooney got nominated for Best Director and Best Supporting, and there was no way he was getting out of there without a consolation prize, so they gave him Best Supporting Actor. Which freed up Best Director for Ang Lee. It's all about politics, and The Oscars have more to lose by having Scorcese lose. |

Some douchebag on tv was saying some upcoming movie "The Last King OF Scotland" had Oscar potential the other day.

Need to see this at some point, I adore the original, but I've heard nothing but good things about this one so I'm sure i'll check it out this week.
It'd be pretty stupid if Scorsese finally won the best picture/director award for a remake though. |

Saw this the other day, was great. Without giving to much away, I loved all of Jack Nicholson's lines. Whenever he spoke I basically went nuts. Plan to see it again soon.
As for Funky Fly talking about Last King Of Scotland, it looks good, but need to see it to judge if it's best picture good. Forest Whitaker is one of my favorites actors, so I'm very excited for it. Forest got screwed on the Emmys this year not even getting a nomination. His work on The Shield was some of the best acting I've seen in a long time. |

The Last King of Scotland will get nominated, and has a very good chance of winning. Forest Whitaker will probably be a strong pick for Best Actor, and it may get a few Supporting nominations and may win best movie. I'm not too sure about Direction, that's the one it's least likely to win, in my opinion.
Little Miss Sunshine may just get nominated for another strong movie presence, and someone may win a Supporting Oscar, but I doubt it will take home the heavyweight trophies. Another potential nomination is The Last Kiss, starring Zach Braff. Critics were kind of split on it, but I think most agree that the performances were great, and there were good song choices by Braff. It was also written by Paul Haggis, and considering he was behind Million Dollar Baby and Crash, they may put TLK through just based on that. Flags of our Fathers will be nominated. Clint Eastwood is a God. If it's awesome, Eastwood again has the drop on Scorcese, so he can leave the fresher, and ultimately better, impression with his work. The Presitge and The Illusionist may get nominated as well. The former has a better shot, but The Illusionist certainly wasn't bad. I must embarassingly confess that I'm not too sure how many movies they nominate, but assuming there is no limit, all of the above deserve to be nominated. A wildcard could be The Science of Sleep. Haven't seen it, heard fairly solid things about it, though. So yeah, movies I can see getting nominated: The Departed Flags of our Fathers The Last King of Scotland The Last Kiss The Prestige Little Miss Sunshine The Illusionist The Science of Sleep I'm not too big on Scorcese's work. I know that kind of makes me a retard, and I've enjoyed his movies, plus he seems like a great guy, but he didn't deserve the Oscar with The Aviator, and although I haven't seen The Departed, I have more emotional investment in FooF and TLK. I'm sure it's a great movie, though, and I'm glad he's gone back to his roots, and the form of filmmaking that made him a legend in the first place. Do I think this is the year Scorcese will pull out the Oscar? I wouldn't be surprised, but I have a feeling he'll be beaten out again, motivated to make the best film ever, and take it home in 2009. |

Little Miss Sunshine is seen as a comedy in the media, and The Academy doesn't respect comedies. If anything, it will win for Alan Arkin, because he's old. The Last Kiss won't win anything that isn't Best Screenplay. It's a remake, it's cast is too young, and it's reviews are too mixed. If ANYTHING, Tom Wilkinson will get a nom for the same reason Alan Arkin gets a nom. The Prestige will get the noms because of the namepower behind it, and the Illusionist will get left out. The Academy doesn't want two magician movies. I don't think Science of Sleep has any serious shot of winning anything because it's indie, and according to some audiences, pretentious. Eastwood is seriously Scorcese's only rightful competition here. Eastwood's won Best Director before, Scorcese is tied with Hitchock for director's with no Oscars, and Eastwood has a companion piece to Flags of our Fathers coming out within the next year. The Academy knows this, and they'll give it to Scorcese. |

There is also that "The Queen" movie. Everyone has been raving about Helen Mirren's performance, and apparently the woman that plays her mother is hilarious. |

Martin needs to break away from Clint. He's reducing his chances of winning by duelling with that guy. Granted, Flags of our Fathers could suck, but the guy needs to work on like a three-year project, get everything perfect, and release it in a year where a film on the level of Crash is the best thing the industry has going. If The Departed were released last year, it'd probably take the Oscar hands down.

SO AWESOME. everything was perfect about this film. it probably won't win any Oscars due to the academy hating Scorsece. This ranks up there with Goodfellas and Taxi Driver

So what happened to the wife? And was that whose son was it? And was that just some hitman at the end or was that a legitimate minor character that I didn't notice?

Haven't seen it yet, but I plan to in the next week or two, but I do not dig the title The Departed at all. It just seems like they stuck in that title because they could not think up of something more clever and just never got to changing it.

Just got back from this. Amazing movie. Great performances by everyone. I honestly think Funky Bunch stole the movie. That was some of his best acting by far. Jack was Jack. Entire theatre cracked up during (spoilers in black) the porn theatre meeting.

Don't forget about United 93 or actually more likely WTC (which is the weaker of the two mind you).
Granted The Departed is better than both but one can't deny the potential sway of films based on 9/11. BTW no way Last Kiss gets anywhere near a best picture nomination. Last edited by Lara Emily; 10-14-2006 at 02:09 AM. |
