The MLB Playoffs SUCK (And how to fix it)
Figured I'd start off with a controversial statement. This year is an exact image in a nutshell of why the baseball playoffs suck. Very rarely can you say that the best team wins. I'm all for unpredictability and the like, but have a problem with an 83 win team who LOST into the playoffs winning a World Series. Really, what you've learned this post-season is that the baseball playoffs are far more about luck than talent. This is prevalent in all sports but more so in baseball. Think of the last ten world champions in every major sport, in football, the team that won may not have always been the best team, but was certainly an upper echelon team. I'll make the only exception the Steelers of last year, but if you win out on the Road, you deserve to win it all. Basketball, the same.
Now think of the last ten world champions in baseball. Most of which weren't the elite team in baseball. The only ones I come up with that were an elite team: 97 and 99 Yankees. How do you get the playoffs to be more balanced and less about luck? My proposal: Firs, make the first round five consecutive days. This favors the team that has played well all year because if you win a division 3 weeks in advance, you have plenty of time to set up your pitching. Conversely, the team that limps in, will not. That means you see their ace probably once in a 5 game series and your ace twice should you pitch them on short rest. This also favors the more complete team. In a 5 games in 5 days situation, you cannot rely on 2 hot pitchers to carry your team because more likely than not, you're only seeing four bodies and one on short rest. A team limping in, probably has injuries or more likely, 2 solid starters and 2 so-so ones. Thus giving an advantage to the team who has played well most of the year, which is how it should be. Teams that get in (Wild Card or Division) should not be on equal footing as the team that dominates its division and clinches in August. Which brings me to point 2. Let the first round home field be dictated by record as it is now. But let the lower seed play all 5 games on the road. To a solid team that won its division but it a lower seed, it wouldn't make to much of a difference. But to the team getting in on the last weekend or last day, you face another hurdle. Again, I just don't think a team that limps in should be on equal footing with one that has played well all year. I say beyond that, keep the next rounds the same, if a lower seed gets in to the LCS like that, they've earned it Again, unpredictability is fun and I'm a huge baseball fan. But really, its not much of a world series when the 2 best teams or even 2 top tier teams aren't in it. This World Series didn't have a great WS feel to it. And I defy anyone to tell me that the best best teams played, or even that two upper tier team (out of those that made the playoffs) decided this World Championship. Thoughts? |

Shut up. MLB playoffs are easily the best ones in pro sports.

I dunno I thoguht this World Series was actually pretty good. At least all the games were close even if it was because nobody this side of Sean Casey could hit for the Tigers. How does a Best of 7 series not show who the better team is? Even if St. Loius did just get lucky and get hot at the right time
Also Marlins won the 97 series not the Yanks, 98 team I think you meant |

you don't fluke into a world series. Why is it STL's fault that no other team in their division beat them? I guess if Houston had won and not STL and then went on to win the world series you'd say, what a great run by the Astros!!!11
Thing is, they would have had 83-84 wins too. So that point is mute. |

League news need marketing, you don't make a commerical bascially admitting the biggest problem with the sport (Lasorta telling a Cubs fan to come watch the World Series, basically saying that most fans really only care about their favorite team and not the sport) and then expect that to work.

the most idiotic thing ever...
You want to fix the playoffs so that the "Best" team wins.....so why eve nhave a playoffs? Why not just let the top two records go at it like in the old days? Last time I checked, if an 83 win team can "Limp" into the playoffs and win 3 series, that makes them worthy. The teams who had time to "Set Their Rotation" and rest their starters lost. And if they are the "Better Teams", they should win, regardless of "Luck", which doesn't exist. Luck is an idea, like God and Democracy... Nothing you said makes any sense. I feel that anyone who reads this thread is > < that much closer to mental retardation. If 8 men walk into a room...where 2 were thought of as the best , and 2 the worst, and they all start kicking each others asses, and the last two standing are the "Worst", maybe you should rethink your ranking system. |

When you get to the playoffs you either buckle down and get the job done or you go home, simple as, everyone knows this and no ones getting cheated, STL did what they needed to do to win and deserved it, Detroit and every other team who got eliminated didn't.

Yeah I took a sports philosophy class last semester and we had a huge debate on what really makes a team the "best team"
People could argue that the Cardinals really aren't "the best team" since there was better teams out there and the Cardinals got hot at the right time - or you could argue that the Cardinals are the best team since they just won the Championship and that makes them the best. Personally I'd go with the second one since you don't play the games on paper, if everyone just went off who was the best team and continued to call them the best there would be no reason to even have games. |

Yeah, there is no 'best team' anyway, and you could define any number of teams as 'the best' depending on what criteria you used. St Louis are the champions, nuf said, whether they had as good a record as the Mets or scored as many runs as the Yankees is pretty irrelevent

Cards brought it all to the table, the other teams didn't plain and simple.

Not gonna lie though it kinda pisses me off when I see an 83 win team win the World Series but then I see the Red Sox who had the worst end of season collapse I've seen in a while still win more games then them.

I made a comment on the boards here, I think it was in 2004, saying that I would like to see the Yankees and Cardinals in the World Series, because it would be nice to watch the two best teams for a change. Everybody freaked out, because they hate the Yankees, but sometimes you don't want to see the underdog, especially in pro sports.
Of course the 2004 World Series was one of the most fun in recent memory, but that is beyond the point. |
