LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Dennis Rodman was released by the Long Beach Jam of the American Basketball Association on Friday to allow the 42-year-old rebounding star the opportunity to try out for NBA teams.

"He's accomplished what he wants to in the ABA and that was to get into 100 percent basketball shape," Jam president Steve Chase said. "Playing in our last two or three games would not get him into better shape. He wants to work out for some NBA teams and we've given him his release to do that."

Rodman played two games for the Jam, most recently Jan. 18, when he removed himself in the third quarter of a 149-108 victory over the Jersey Squires due to concern of a possible strained calf.

At the time of the injury, Rodman's agent, Darren Prince, said he would miss the next two games, but was hopeful he would be back in uniform for a game Jan. 25. Rodman also missed that game and five more after that before his release.

Rodman signed a contract paying him $850 a week on Dec. 19, but did not practice with the team until Jan. 10 because he said he was rehabilitating an injured knee. He grabbed 14 rebounds in 28 minutes in his debut with the Jam on Jan. 16 in a 131-110 victory over Fresno, and had eight rebounds in a little less than 19 minutes against Jersey.

The stint with the Jam was Rodman's first with a team since being waived by the NBA's Dallas Mavericks in 2000.

Rodman might sell a few tickets, thats all...

as for Danny, yeah... I'm not happy either... but you can bet this, in 3yrs if the Celts are in the finals everyones going to be kissing his ass.
