JBL is the best color commentator in the business right now.
So I'm driving home listening to Blackened by Metallica and since I was kinda bored, and start thinking up a Wrestlemainia main event entrance with Blackened as the theme music (it almost goes without saying I was main eventing in this fantasy). I make my way down to the ring letting the entire 6 or 7 minutes of the song play before I get in the ring leaving my opponent waiting in the middle of the (I can do this because of course I'm coming in as the champion).
During all of this, I hear JBL's voice in the back of my head saying, "This is masterful, Josh is sending a message by this entrance. He is saying before the match even starts, 'I am champion, we are doing this on my time'. And while he is doing this his opponent is forced to wait and cool down. Before the bell has even rung, Josh is setting the tempo." And so on. While this was all just a little fantasy of a match, it is the exact kind of thing JBL does. He actaully adds color to the commentary. I really do enjoy how he breaks down the matches and explains how it feels, the psychological and other intanglable elements in the match other than, "That move doesn't feel good." On the other hand, Micheal Cole is fairly decent at play by play, about as good as any, but JBL is by far the best color commentator right now...maybe ever. |

Well in all fairness now that I think about it, Tazz does talk about the mechincs of moves, but not really about psychological aspect without Styles asking about it.
And I liked Heyman simply because he pissed JR off at every chance. Also, while I've heard enough WCW and TNA announcers, I could never tell who was suppose to be doing play by play and who was doing color, plus they all suck anyways. |

Heenan was good, but I like how JBL can tell it from a wrestler's POV.

JBL and Tazz are pretty equal in my opinion. Like you guys said they give you a lot of insight into whats going on. King has started to do this more, but he still plays dumb way to much.

How you didn't crash or something while imagining all of that is beyond me
![]() Seriously though, JBL is awesome on commentary, he makes it feel real. Like he actually gives a damn about whats happening, and is buying into it, which tells the viewer they should to. He sells the product better than any other man at the commentary table right now imo Last edited by Lord-Of-Darkness; 08-19-2007 at 06:30 PM. |

2) The first time I read that, I thought you said that JBL is shit on commentary, which confused me when you go on to say how he makes it feel real. |

JBL is, for my money, the best color man the business has ever seen.

I believe Michaels had just been put through an announce table, and the Coach said some thing like "What an incredible move that was, I bet that hurt!" To which Nash responded "Yeah but if that happened today the guy would've already sprung back up and started a comeback" Tell it like it is Kev, tell it like it is ![]() |

Nash never did it on regular weekly basis. So he can't be considered. Though his brief one times behind the booth are legendary, every one of them...

Nash was funny and all, but it was painfully obvious that he doesn't give a fuck about the business. He acts like he's too cool for kayfabe or some shit.

I don't see what makes you say that. In WCW, he was almost as bad as Hogan about putting people over. I understand that he's hilarious. I get that. But to me, he has always seemed to be out for himself. What have Cena, Lashley, or Batista done to fuck anybody over?

I have to take Anybody Thrilla's side in the Cena, Batista and Lesnar side of things. Well, maybe Nash beats Lesnar. But Kev has always been pretty self-righteous, come on. It's only recently that he's been willing to work with the little guys and help them get over. The man is very entertaining (as long as he is not wrestling), and his comedy shit is great. I doubt he hates the business, that would just be absurd, but I think his love for it now is more "I've made lots of money by doing this."
JBL is easily the best colour commentator out there today. I can think of a few guys who would give them a run for their money if allowed to. If Raven even steps down as a wrestler before he dies, he would make an amazing colour commentator. His spiel about how psychology is like masturbating? Genius. I think Kurt Angle would be great if he ever decided to stop wrestling, but still wanted to remain in the business. That one is just theoretical, though. As for the best of all-time? He's up there, he deserves to be mentioned with the best, but Bobby Heenan, Paul Heyman and Jesse Ventura have all apparently been great. I can attest to the greatness of Heenan and Heyman. Ventura I have not heard as much of, but people seem to really love his work. Jerry Lawler is fucking hopeless as a colour guy out there. The whole purpose of a colour commentator is to talk up the match, put over the guys having it, and telling us why they are doing things and how effective they are. These days, Lawler acts as if he has never seen a suplex before. What is the point of having him out there? |

My dream commentary team is easily Joey Styles and JBL. If the WWE were smart, they'd put those two together during a SmackDown!/ECW match. Fuck, have ECW and SmackDown! do joint "SmackDown! vs. ECW" shows one week, with Styles and Layfield working one show, and Michael Cole and Tazz working the other.
I'm honestly looking forward to JBL's inevitable moment where he stands up to a heel, though. I am honestly going to mark out when a young, cocky heel is standing in front of the SmackDown! commentary table, and is asking JBL what he is going to do about it (in reference to whatever the heel is frustrating JBL with), and JBL stands up and removes his headset. Just don't make it a full face turn, but rather just a one time "Don't fuck with me, remember I can kick ass" moment. |

JBL is the best colour commentator on TV today but he is not as good as Heenan in his prime. Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon for me had amazing chemistry and were entertaining as hell. Everytime Heenen tries to bullshit for when a heel cheats you always got the infamous "Will you stop" from Monsoon.
