Laptop freezing problem

Odd problem going on with my laptop.

I turned it on and my MSN/AIM windows popped up like normal. I tried exiting out of them...but they remained frozen on screen. Then I tried clicking the start menu, and it came up...but I couldn't click on anything, it was essentially frozen to the background. So basically I couldn't do anything and so I'm stuck using Safe Mode until things get fixed.

I've already tried a shortcut by making a new account, no dice.

Also, defragmenting didn't help either.

Any other ideas?

A virus?
Does it still do it when you have the battery out of the laptop?
Does it show any undetected devices in device manager, they have yellow !'s next to them. (start, settings, control panel, system, devices, or something)
