The Office is a steaming pile of turd.
However, most other British comedies are excellent... Such as Blackadder. |

One of my friends seems to quite like The Mighty Boosh, but I haven't seen anything from it to really personally recommend it.

Nothing touches Fawlty Towers, British or otherwise. Pure fucking genius that I doubt will ever be equalled.
But you can't go wrong with Blackadder, although I thought goes Forth was the weakest of the 4, it's still pure class. Let's face it how can you go wrong with Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. |

Blackadder is brilliant, as is The Young Ones, for older comedy shows. Peep Show and Father Ted are up there with Fawlty Towers for me in more recent times, though Father Ted is definitely Irish humour rather than British but give it a go anyway.
I love The Office but for me Peep Show is both more innovative a lot funnier. You probably won't have seen anything else quite like it. New series on Friday for all the Brits. The thing I love about it is how morally bankrupt they can make their characters through the use of the inner monologues for personal justification while showing them at least attempting to behave normally on the face of it. As for The Mighty Boosh, I like it but it's a bit hit and miss. I think you have to take it in a certain way and a lot of people dismiss it quickly as wacky student humour when I think it's a bit more subtle than that. As for sketch shows, Reeves and Mortimer's various incarnations are the greatest. |

You should try some british sketch shows, like Big Train, Man Stroke Woman and going with ECG, Reeves and Mortimer, and A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

That Mitchell and Webb Look is nothing compared to Peep Show. Could also try Two Pints of Lager & A Packet of Crisps, bit hit and miss though. Oh, and if anyone mentions The Catherine Tate Show or Little Miss Jocelyn for sketch shows, they have no taste. |

When I didn't think anything could out-shite latter day Little Britain, Catherine Tate came along, and when I didn't think anything could out-shite that, Little Miss Jocelyn came along. How do sketch shows keep getting worse?

I also love Red Dwarf.
Interesting thing about Fawlty Towers. Only 13 episodes were ever aired, however they made another 7 episodes which have NEVER been seen. After completing the 3rd unaired season John Cleese and Connie Booth (Polly in FT) separated (eventually divorcing) and she would not give her permission to release the series. John Cleese was apparently quite happy for the 3rd season to air but Connie Booth was adamant that it would never be shown. |

Quote:
Hell, Cleese and Booth were already divorced by the time the second series was made. There was allegedly ONE episode filmed but unaired, due to production issues rather than creative disputes. However, even this is unfounded. |

The new series of Peep Show started here in the UK on Friday. It is by far the best British comedy around right now. Curb Your Enthusiasm is the best comedy for me.

Mr Bean Fawlty Towers Bottom / The Young Ones Only Fools and Horses Red Dwarf One Foot in the Grave Porridge / Open all hours Rising Damp Goodnight Sweetheart Harry Enfield I liked Rab C Nesbitt, but dammit, was so hard to understand him. The guy who plays Rab C [Gregor Fisher] also did some episodes of a guy who didnt talk much. He did a advert for hamlett - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbdxm8Ia0Wc friggin hilarious first time i saw it. Some of my favorites right there which i have viewed through my life. The new episodes of Peep Show have been great so far. So many great characters with Johnson, Super Hans ( "which one of us would you suck off?" ) etc.
Would recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to pick it up on DVD. |

Plus, you really think Booth would have the ability to turn to the BBC and say "you know that critically acclaimed and high rated TV series I wrote you that you just spent a couple of million filming a new series of? well, I don't want you to show it". They would have laughed her out of the room.

By the way, if you want some good British comedy, check out Only Fools and Horses, the greatest British sitcom ever made. The only problem is, I really don't know how well it would translate across the pond, especially considering the age of it now. The comedy comes from the strength of its leading characters and this may be lost on an unfamiliar audience... if you do give it a chance, watch it from the beginning, forgive it for its weaknesses in the first couple of seasons because it gets very good from series 3 and REALLY fucking good from about series 6.

Other than that, the best comedy shows Britain is producing right now are Peep Show and Gavin & Stacey.

That's what I thought until about two weeks ago when I finally gave in to several recommendations and trust me... fucking good. I may be biased, as it's partly set in Wales and very familiar humour to me, but it seems even the English like it... it won a Bafta award as voted by the audience a few weeks back.
Rob Brydon is fucking gold. |
