Was there a difference between Ken and Ryu
In street fighter 2? I always thought they were the same but different character sprites. But then have heard from some that Ken was a little faster but Ryu was slightly stronger.
Wondering this as I watch SF2 the anime movie, much better than the live action one. Random Israel's Son song by Silverchair in the movie too. |

Ken is slightly quicker, and Ryu is slightly stronger as you've mentioned. Ken's specials have also evolved a little better than Ryu's.

Aside from the aforementioned difference, Ken's tomoe throw had a roll and Ryu's didn't.
Then starting in SF2 Turbo more differences were introduced. Namely, Ken's shoryuken having more horizontal movement and fire added. Ryu's fireball had a special version that was faster and more powerful. Aslo, Ken got an air throw. In Super SF 2 Turbo, their movesets actually began to diverge. |

Yeah, Funky's right. And moreover:
Ryu's fireball doesn't leave him open as long as Ken because he's better at it. Ken's dragonpunch is multi-hit, and more a toe-to-toe move as opposed to Ryu's that's more anti-air. Ryu's dragonpunch also knocks you down on one hit unless you start it in deep. Ken's kicks are more effective than Ryu's, and flashier to boot (pun intended). In 3rd Strike Ken has kick mix-ups that can really trick up your opponant. Ryu, gameplay and character wise, favors straight forward application. His kicks are roughly unchanged from the Turbo days, and he kept the straight FP, whereas Ken has a 'right hook' FP. Ken's Hurricane Kick is also a multihit move, while Ryu's can knock you down (properties may have changed but I think that's how it worked). As far as supermoves; Ken's Shinryuken is a completely vertical dragon punch variant, while Ryu's super-dragon punch is [presumably] the one that scarred Sagat (the one where the camera closes in and Ryu uses his other hand). Ken has no superfireball, but has a super kick combo. Oddly enough, even though Ken pimped out his Hurricane Kick - Ryu is the one with a super Hurricane Kick, which depending on the game has vaccume properties. Let's talk about Akuma now. Akuma, storywise, uses a lethal form of Ryu and Ken's art. Infact, their styles may be the altered ones, with Akuma having the purest form. His fireball and dragonpunch is as strong as Ryu and Ken's respectively. Hell, Ryu's Denjin Hadoken (the purple-ish super fireball that stuns you fully charged) is essentially him trying to create an 'Akuma' fireball. In the recently released Street Fighter 4 anime you can see Ryu preparing a Denjin Hadoken at the end, before Ken breaks it up with a Shinryuken. Dan sucks. |

i am not familiar with the series or storylines beyond SF2, but is Bison still the top guy throughout the series or is he dethroned at some point like what happened with Shang Tsuang in MK.

Bison was dropped by Akuma in SF2. Shadowloo(SP) disbanded by SF3. SF4 takes place before 3 but after 2, so Bison and company are back - but their organization is still reeling from ass-kickings.

Ken clearly has the best background music for his stage, though.

Depends on the version of sf2, in world warrior kens only different move was a double roll throw. In champion edition he gained a dragon punch that swung outwards more and a faster spinning hurricane kick. Turbo introduced more changes and they changed more as the series went on.

I have a rock version of Ken's theme that would be awesome for Guitar Hero.

I just remember in XMen Vs Street Fighter how different their specials were.
Ryu had the crazy fireball that was as tall as him and went across the screen and Ken had that crazy shoriyuken that was as wide as him and went all the way up the screen |

MVC2 isn't the most balanced game out there. Damn fun though.
